An umbilical hernia occurs when the muscle tissue around the belly button becomes weak and a bulge forms where the abdominal organs fit.
This usually happens in newborns, although umbilical hernia surgery is usually not recommended unless the umbilical hernia has not healed on its own by the infant's age three or four.
An umbilical hernia needs treatment when it occurs in adults, as it will not be reversed without medical intervention. In the event of complications, such as a strangulation of the intestine, an umbilical hernia operation should be performed immediately.
